COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

PUTTING THE SUSPENSE IN ROMANTIC SUSPENSE
A Romantic Suspense novel needs spine-tingling suspense. To involve your readers to the point where they feel the tension and can’t wait to turn the pages, you must, first, make them relate to and be concerned about your hero and heroine. How often have you started to read a story and found at a moment when the H and/or H walk into a tense situation that you just don’t care what happens to them? That’s when you stop reading.

I use an Outrageously Rude Interview with my hero and heroine to familiarize myself with their emotions and attitudes. Over the course of their answers to fifty-odd questions, I learn a great deal about their flaws and virtues. Of course, very few of these details make their way into the actual story. What is important is that I know the characters well enough to make their thoughts and actions consistent in all the situations the story puts them in.

Of course, you must keep your plot believable and full of hooks. It’s essential for the pace to be fast-moving and varied. There are various techniques to be aware of concerning maintaining tension in your pace.

This workshop will give you some of the tools necessary to achieve these goals. It will also point out some of the pitfalls to avoid. It will conclude with some do’s and don’t’s from an acquisition editor’s point of view.

KEEP THOSE PAGES TURNING
If you want readers eager to read on from the first page of your novel, you must maintain a tight control of pace and use solid hooks. Subtle hints that there is more to know about the past or the emotional makeup of your hero or heroine makes the readers curious. Partly stated ideas raise questions in her mind. A character’s thoughts like “Not again.” Or “He couldn’t know about that!” make them want to know what happened earlier.

KEEP THOSE PAGES TURNING is an intensive, fourteen day course. You will write paragraphs and short scenes and, with my help, analyse them. We will deal with writing effective dialogue.

I will read and comment on every one of your responses. Some of those comments will contain suggestions you might want to act upon. Some will simply say you have the right idea.

I will edit one scene of no more than 1000 words.
MAKING YOUR SCENES COME ALIVE

This twenty-one day course will teach you to think of your story as a series of vibrant and engrossing scenes.

To achieve this you will learn to
1. make each character unique and believable.
2. make your descriptive language powerful and active
3. make your dialogue realistic (realizing that each character has a different speech pattern and favorite vocabulary and that each situation has its own dialogue demands).
4. keep the pace moving along so that your story does not get bogged down in the middle.

I will read and comment on every assignment that is submitted. You will write more than one scene but I will do an edit of one short scene (under 1000 words).
